Smith Museum

The museum was completed in 1980 with funds contributed by Elizabeth Smith in memory of her father George A. Smith and her grandfather, Samuel Abbot Smith. The museum houses exhibits and the Society’s collection of artifacts, manuscripts, and other Arlington memorabilia. The Smith Museum is handicapped accessible.

A Few of Our Favorite Things

Our collection has been displayed in many places — formerly in the library basement, and now in this modern building – built in 1981. The Smith Building contains, space for offices collection storage, and gallery space. This project presents the conclusion of two important projects – the complete renovation of the museum with new walls, carpeting, and lighting; and the completion of a collections care project which addressed critical storage needs for a portion of our collection.

Currently on exhibit in the Smith Museum is “A Few of Our Favorite Things”

The Arlington Historical Society is pleased to announce a new exhibition celebrating our 125^th anniversary as a collecting organization. The exhibition also celebrates the successful completion of a grant-funded collections care project and our newly renovated museum space. “A Few of Our Favorite Things” asks volunteers, board members, and friends to serve as co-curators. Each participant chose an item that has special meaning for them from our collection of over 18,000. They then researched and wrote a short caption describing the history of the artifact and their reason for choosing it.

“This exhibition offers new and unexpected perspectives on our collection from a cross-section of people who are involved in the Society in many ways,” says Director Sara Lundberg. “It mines from our diverse collection that began shortly after our founding and continues to this day.”
